Why do we need alternative energy sources ?

For more than a century we have relied on fossil fuels to generate energy, but in today's world the use of oil, gas and coal is becoming a bigger problem every day. In parallel, our need for renewable energy is increasing. While environmental threats such as global warming may immediately come to mind, there are other reasons for our need for alternative energy sources. What are these reasons that make alternative energy sources not an option but a necessity ?
